Laser Treatment For Pigmented Lesions

Gentle laser devices use a single wavelength to target melanin in the skin. Depending on the different causes and conditions of hyperpigmentation, lasers can be used as effective treatments for melasma, dark spots and age spots. The powerful Candela laser extended pulses to targets the excess melanin in the skin and shatters it into tiny pigment particles that are metabolized out of the body. Instead of using a photothermal effect that causes the skin to heat up, the laser system uses a photoacoustic effect. This means that people usually have little to no downtime after their treatments. The Gentle holds clearances from FDA, CE, and TGA, undrestandig its safety and efficacy.

Understanding the Origins of Dark Spots:

The emergence of dark spots on the skin is intricately linked to the phenomenon of skin pigmentation. The production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin coloration, is orchestrated by melanocytes residing in the deep basal layer of the epidermis. When subjected to UV-B rays, these melanocytes go into overdrive, amplifying melanin production and resulting in a condition known as hyperpigmentation.

Exploring Hyperpigmentation:

Hyperpigmentation, often recognized as dark spots, is a prevalent condition that manifests as certain areas of the skin adopting a darker or distinct hue. The term hyperpigmentation signifies an excess deposition of melanin, the brown pigment that typically imbues the skin with its color. Factors contributing to hyperpigmentation include sun exposure, hormonal fluctuations, or an underlying medical condition, unveiling the diverse origins of this common skin concern.

Exploring the Varieties of Hyperpigmentation:

Hyperpigmentation manifests in various , with three primary types—melasma, sunspots (solar lentigo), and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

1. Melasma:
Melasma represents a benign skin disorder characterized by heightened pigmentation, primarily attributed to hormonal influences. This condition frequently occurs in pregnant women and typically surfaces on areas such as the face or abdomen.

2. Sunspots (Solar Lentigo):
Sunspots gradually develop as a result of prolonged exposure to sunlight. Predominantly appearing in sun-exposed regions like the shoulders, hands, and face, these spots are alternately referred to as sun-damage spots, photodamage, or age spots.

3. Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation:
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a common occurrence following skin injuries or conditions that induce inflammation, such as acne. This type of hyperpigmentation is a response to the aftermath of an inflammatory event, leaving areas of heightened pigmentation on the skin's surface.

Understanding the Process of Hyperpigmentation due to Sun Exposure:

1. UV-B Induced Reactive Oxygen Generation:
Exposure to UV-B rays from the sun triggers the generation of reactive oxygen within the epidermis.

2. Excessive Melanin Production:
The presence of reactive oxygen sets off an intensified production of melanin by melanocytes, the skin cells responsible for pigment synthesis.

3. Formation of Skin Hyperpigmentations:
The culmination of these processes leads to the manifestation of skin hyperpigmentations, wherein certain areas of the skin experience an overproduction of melanin, resulting in darkened pigmentation.

Procedure and Sessions:

The number of sessions required typically depends on the specific condition being treated. The procedure is designed to be comfortable for patients, incorporating a pre- and post-laser pulse cooling burst through the dynamic cooling device (DCD™). This ensures the protection of the skin's surface and enhances patient comfort throughout the treatment. The treatment plan is tailored to individual needs, optimizing results while prioritizing the well-being of the patients.
